UPDATE: Minister: US sanctions open new opportunities for Russia–EU coop

(Adds details in last paragraph)

PARIS, Aug 29 (PRIME) -- New U.S. sanctions against Moscow is a chance for European companies to develop partnerships with Russia, Economic Development Minister Maxim Oreshkin said after a meeting with French businessmen on Tuesday.

The U.S. extended the sanctions against Russia in August by limiting the maximum term of lending to Russian banks to 14 days and to oil and gas companies to 60 days.

“We indeed mentioned the sanctions, mentioned the new U.S. legislation. I noticed in this respect that reaction of the European partners, of the European companies is more positive because the situation affects relations between Russia and Europe really slightly, I can even say it offers new opportunities to European partners. They understand this and are going to develop their business in Russia,” Oreshkin said.

He said that France’s Total and Russian gas producer Novatek are discussing further development of projects in Russia. “There was a representative of company Total at the meeting, which is very actively engaged in projects in Russia, working on a large project Yamal LNG together with company Novatek. They are discussing further development of projects in Russia, which is why there is an absolutely positive approach there as well.”
